Abstract: This presentation aims to inform the researchers of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Bogazici University about the research topics of interest to Prof. Cagatay Candan, a visiting researcher to the department. The goal is to detect some potential research areas which are of common interest.

In this talk, I plan to briefly present the thesis topics of my recent students (Detection of Slow Moving Targets from SAR images and TDOA based localization) and on-going thesis studies (Beampattern design under PAPR constraint using ADMM and Direction of Arrival Estimation under Intermittent Interference). The remaining part of the talk is on the topics that I would like to study further during my visit. These topics are approximate inference and causal inference. I will present brief information on approximate inference, which is the topic I am currently studying, through a simple example illustrating the mean-field approximation in a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) setting.
