His research interests span the areas of image and video processing, watermarking, biometry, 3D shape analysis, brain interfaces and Bayesian signal processing. Since 1976 B. Sankur has initiated several research projects, was instrumental in the re-organization of the curricula, and has founded the signal & image-processing laboratory: BUSIM. He has held visiting positions in the University of Ottawa (Canada), in Istanbul Technical University, in the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands), and in Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications (France).

B. Sankur was one of the initiators of the local IEEE conferences on Signal Processing and its Applications (SIU). He was also the chairman of the ICT’96: International Conference on Telecommunications, technical co-chairman of ICASSP’2000, and chairman of EUSIPCO’2005. He has published more than 150 journal and conference papers and is serving in the editorial boards of the Signal Processing, Image and Video Processing and Applied Signal Processing journals.

He was involved in continuing education courses, and has acted as an industrial consultant to major telecommunications companies in Turkey. He was one of the chief researchers in the ISDN project at Teletaş-Alcatel, as well as in the TAFICS (Turkish Armed Forces Integrated Communication Systems) project. He has received Mustafa Parlar (2002) and BU Rectorate (2005) awards of Achievement in Research.

Presently he is the director of the BUSIM Laboratory at Boğaziçi University, and involved in several European framework projects and bi-national collaborative research agreements.
